Reuters and the AP are reporting that Zurab Zhavania has died of an accidental gas leak. Mr. Zhavania was the rather young prime minister of Georgia (only 41). He had replaced former Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze in 2004 after protests stemming from a corrupt election.
He was considered pro-Western. While no evidence suggests foul play, it is hard to rule it out, and it will be interesting to see the resulting speculations.
I hope that reform and stability can come to Georgia and that the next leader shows strong democratic support.
